The Metropole hotel enjoys a great location, minutes from a fabulous seaside promenade, which is the pride and joy of this smart residential area. There is something for everybody within walking distance of the hotel, be it smart shops, great restaurants, swimming clubs, Bars and pubs …. even churches. Just up the road is a bus stop that links into the towns main bus route which leads to everywhere on the Island; the airport, the capital Valletta and even Gozo, a sister Island.
The hotel works well and offers excellent value for money. In parts it is old however, it is clean, provides a good kitchen and a very decent bar. The staff is a great asset in that they are helpful and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Management is always in evidence and no problem seems to be too much.
Accommodation is varied and the balcony rooms overlooking Sir Adrian Dingli Street are the most spacious. There is a supplement for these rooms which is well worth paying, but better still is the Club Room, which is the highest level of accommodation offered and comes with tea and coffee making facilities, fridge, safe and a generous sized bathroom. Other rooms are referred to as ‘run of house’ and these range from smaller rooms some with balcony, to larger three and four bedded rooms which are particularly popular with organizers of groups of younger people. All the bedrooms have a bathroom en-suite even though some only have showers and each is equipped with an air-conditioning unit, television and telephone. Safes are located in the reception area and can be rented. All accommodation is purchased on minimum Bed and Breakfast terms and the breakfast included is Continental although English breakfast can be ordered at a supplement.
The hotel attracts various nationalities in the summer but mainly British, German and other north European clientele in the winter and shoulder seasons. For this reason the kitchen provides for all tastes and the evening buffet operation in the restaurant allows clients to pick and choose from a selection of main courses. Fish is offered most days and vegetarian dishes are frequently offered but can by arrangement be provided on a daily basis. Amongst the starters there is always a salad table, pasta for which the hotel is renowned, and soup whilst the daily selection of desserts normally includes a hot sweet in winter. In addition to the main restaurant, the hotel provides light lunches in the main bar in winter and it also boasts AMIGOS, which is a great take away Pizzeria and Tapathia open all day everyday, until the late evening.
Winter brings with it a cosy atmosphere in the bar where there is live entertainment on many evenings and TV football showing the main Premiership and European games on others. These events form part of the popular ‘all inclusive’ - Winter House Party, for which the hotel also organises day outings, bingo sessions a weekly afternoon tea dance and a dinner dance on Saturdays. The bar scene in summer is different in that is transfers to the roof where there is a small pool and three separate sun decks. A grill room operates at lunchtime and drinks in the evening are served until gone midnight, when to background music guests can enjoy starlit skies in a romantic setting.
The Metropole has been hosting happy guests for many a year and there seems no stopping it.
