Climate / Weather

Malta's weather and climate, typically Mediterranean are very similar the southern Italy or southern Greece ones. They are influenced mostly by the sea.

Having hot, dry summers, warm, wet autumns, and short, cool rainy winters. About three-fourths of the total annual rainfall (600 millimetres / 24 inches) falls between October and March; on the other hand June, July, and August are generally quite dry.

Temperature is very stable, the annual average is 18ºC (64ºF) and the monthly averages range from 12º C (54ºF) to 31ºC (88ºF). Winds are quite strong and frequent. Humidity is high and is generally above 40%.

Malta has mild winters with no snow, as temperatures never fall beneath 10ºC (50ºF) in daytime and 0ºC (32ºF) during the night. Rainfall usually starts in late September, early October. Thunderstorms and heavy rainfall is common this early in the season. Actually most of the rainfall falls during these thunderstorms. It is common to have windy days sometimes reaching gale force, usually either from the northwest or from the northeast. These last about 3 days before blowing themselves out. But winter is mostly mild with beautiful sunny days with very good visibility. The average daytime temperatures not lower than 15ºC (59ºF).

Summers are hot with high temperatures usually above 30ºC (86ºF) quite often more in the 34ºC - 35ºC. Nights are also very hot as the temperature doesn’t vary much from day to night. The heat is felt more because of the high humidity as Malta is an island surrounded by sea. The hottest months are July and August. It starts warming up from April till September this making the summer months dry and hot. Spring and autumn bring with them a wind called the Sirocco, which is very humid, and thus make the temperature soar.

Annual rainfall is rather low, about 600mm (24 inches). Malta has an average of 6 hours sunshine a day in mid winter and 12 hours in summer this making the dry season longer than in southern Italy.

The following is the table of average measures, from Balzan Malta Weather Station, located in the central part of Malta.
