The heritage organisation
Din l-Art Helwa has taken a strong stand against the
proposed creation of landfills near the Megalithic
Temples of Hagar Qim ands Mnajdra, regarded as World
Heritage Sites, and warned it is ready to raise the
issue with international organisations.
Mnajdra Temple is also in the list of the top 50 most
endangered world heritage sites compiled by UNESCO.
Calling the decision as “irresponsible” and
creating "unacceptable risk”, the organisation’s
president Martin Scicluna raised doubts about the environment
impact statement by consultants SLR Consulting Ltd
and AIS Environmental Ltd.
Din l-Art Helwa is concerned about the way the EIS
was conducted, especially the risk-assessment process.
Martin Scicluna said that the final conclusion of
his organisation is that proposal for an interim-engineered
landfill near Mnajdra temple should not be implemented.
Instead he advocated the immediate use of the Ghallis
area and the introduction of waste separation before
2006.
The proposal to create an engineered landfill near
Mnajdra has met very strong opposition from various
sectors of society, including Government MP Jeffrey
Pullicino Orlando, Alternattiva Demokratika and residents
of Siggiewi.
