In line with UNESCO’s
mission which is to spread culture, education and science
through the most efficient communication strategies,
the Maltese National Commission for UNESCO has produced
and funded this CD-Rom on the National Library and
which the Minister of Education, the Hon. Louis Galea,
has accepted to launch.
The members of the Committee selected the National
Library as the first subject on what is hoped will
be a long series on Maltese historical sites because
they believed that this national gem is not sufficiently
known, appreciated and visited by the Maltese. It is
practically ignored by most tourists.
The National Library deserves to be better known and
appreciated. This interactive CD-Rom aims to do just
that! Applying the most advanced electronic technology
of communication, it brings alive through the written
text, illustrations and virtual tours a close look
at the Library and its treasures. The data it presents
should whet the interest of the readers/viewers to
visit the place and experience first-hand its ambience
and contents.
The general editor is Professor Charles Farrugia,
who is also the chairman of the Maltese National Commission
for UNESCO. Mr. Lino Bugeja compiled and edited the
contents, while Ms. Maroma Camilleri was the specialist
consultant. Alert Communications produced the CD-Rom.
The National Commission is grateful to Mr. Philip Borg,
the Director of Libraries and Archives, and his staff
for their collaboration throughout the production process.
This CD-Rom will be sold at Lm4 from the National
Library in Valletta and Victoria, Gozo, from Malta
Heritage Sites, and from selected book-stores.
